Sticks, George Saunders

Among all the other short stories, Sticks by Geroge Sanders is shorter than any other past stories. Stcks from George sanders makes me wander what the pole means to the family. I liked this story as I though this was rather insightful. Dad in the family communicate with the sticks in the yard by decorating the sticks in every different occasion as shown in the story none of his offspring prefers his way. With unskillful way of communication, his disconnection with the family is shown after death when the story ends in vain with the new commers eradicating the pole. After the story the story made me look back of the value of family as the story reflects the death of the father.

The Sisters, James Joyce

  rate: 6.1  I liked 'The Sisters' by James Joyce in the way of his writing style. In a same old happy ever af†er story,  superficial story plots such as the unwanted marriage of a princess or valiant knight's heart-touching story of growth. However, James Joyce inserts inner meaning into the storyline and characters that wow me as well as the readers. After reading the story and realizing that the death of Father Flynn had more deeper meaning than its superficial death was interesting. Although I don't understand the religious subject within the story, group discussion in class made me realize that death also symbolized paralyzed Catholic church. Overall the book, 'The Sisters' was fascinating to look deeply into the story and find new hidden material.
